2nd Annual Local Canoe Journey

2nd Annual Local Canoe Journey

by Morgan Gaines / Thursday, 25 June 2026 / Published in Public Notices, Tribal Event, Tribal News

July 16 – July 19, 2026, Coos Bay, Oregon

Exploring our waters and growing stronger as a community.

Please join us for the second annual Local Canoe Journey! Local Canoe Journey is about exploring our ancestral waterways and rebuilding strength within our canoe culture.

This year, we will continue exploring local waterways while sharing community meals and self-guided cultural activities. There will be a little something for everyone, from more advanced pulls in challenging river waters to family-friendly pull on lake waters.

We will also offer a variety of cultural activities at the community center for Tribal members and families who would like to participate in supportive ways and who do not have the ability to pull in the intermediate/advance pulls. This will include beading, gift making, and youth activities from the Healing of the Canoe curriculum.

This is a family-friendly event. Families are encouraged to participate together. No Childcare will be provided. All youth under the age of 18 MUST be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

All participants that sign up will be notified via email of the daily itineraries prior to the start of Local Canoe Journey.

What do intermediate/advanced pulls require?

Intermediate/advanced pulls require a level of physical endurance and mental stamina to pull against currents, winds, and prolonged exposer to all types of weather. These pulls have limited breaks and require pullers to do repetitive action for lengthy durations. If you have shoulder, back or health issues, we recommend you participate in the family friendly pull on Sunday, July 19th.

For more clarification regarding intermediate/advanced pulls please contact Alycia Cossey at (541- 294-1237) or email localcanoejourney@ctclusi.org

A limited number of rooms are available for Elders or Tribal Members that need specific accommodations.

Transportation provided daily from Tribal Hall to pull start locations and landings ONLY.
