CTCLUSI FORESTRY

We are the living descendants of the Miluk, Hanis, Siuslaw and Lower Umpqua people. We have and always will be stewards of our lands.

- As of Oct 17, the 2025 Fire Season has ended in Oregon -

It is our duty to know, teach, promote and perpetuate our culture and traditions and steward our lands accordingly.

The Western Oregon Tribal Fairness Act was passed and signed into law in January of 2018. Title II of the Act conveyed portions of federal lands, previously managed by the Bureau of Land Management, into trust for the benefit of the Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw Indians (CTCLUSI). These conveyed lands consist of seven parcels totaling 14,742 acres. Dispersed throughout the ancestral territory of CTCLUSI, each of these tracts is culturally and/or economically significant and will play a vital role in promoting Tribal self-determination and sovereignty. These lands, now held in trust by the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), will be managed in accordance with applicable federal and tribal law, according to the desires of the Tribal Membership.

CTCLUSI Officially Starts Stewardship of Forest Lands

Written by: Tyler Slyter- Director of Forestry

On Sunday August 10th, 2025, The Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw Indians passed 3 Resolutions approving the sell of Trust Land Timber. This is the first time in the history of the Tribe that Timber Sales have occurred.

The 3 projects are:

  • Heluu Timber Sale: 35 acres of Timber on Lake Tract
  • Hawatit Timber Sale: 36 acres of Timber on Tioga Tract
  • Taqnis Timber Sale: 22 acres of Timber on Lake Tract (surrounding the January 2024 Ice Storm damaged forest lands)

The sales are occurring on the (approx.) 15,000 acres of Forest Land returned to CTCLUSI through the Western Oregon Tribal Fairness Act (WOFTA) of 2017.

It has been a long journey to this point; but time was necessary to create the policies and procedures that allow CTCLUSI to steward our lands in perpetuity. (see Voice of CLUSI Newsletter article June 2025).

All 3 Timber sales adhere to the CTCLUSI Forest Management Plan. The Environmental Review was also approved by CTCLUSI through utilization of the Tribes’ ITAMP status.

The exact dates of activities are not known, as sub-contracts for Timber Operations are currently being solicited. Tribal Members who visit our Forest Lands may soon see work begin on the construction of roads that are required for access to the Timber.

As you visit the Lands, please be respectful and cautious around Timber Operation areas. Never approach an active Timber Harvesting site unless accompanied by a member of the Foresty Team.

The Forestry Department will continue to update Tribal Members on these 3 Projects, and future Projects. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to me directly.
